A front yard is mostly seen from the street, so this plan spends its money where the street looks: a planted bed the full width of the house, a straight flagstone path to the door with lights beside it, and a bed at each front corner to soften the edges. The lawn does the rest.
The corner beds are held in with a stone border and the bed along the house with steel edging, which is what keeps the mulch out of the lawn and the mower out of the mulch. The tree is placed forward and to one side so it frames the house rather than hiding it.
